The Chermside & Districts Historical Society was founded in 1998. Following the closure of Chermside State School in 1996, there was a feeling in the community that its collective history was being lost, and actions should be taken to preserve it. Early meetings were held at Kedron-Wavell RSL and the Chermside Library.
While we are located in Chermside, the "& Districts" portion of our name covers a large amount of territory. We collect and disseminate information on the old Kedron Shire, which was one of 20 local governmental areas that amalgamated to form Brisbane City in 1925. "Our area" includes the entirety of 19 suburbs: Aspley, Bald Hills, Boondall, Bracken Ridge, Bridgeman Downs, Carseldine, Chermside, Chermside West, Everton Park, Fitzgibbon, Geebung, Gordon Park, Kedron, McDowall, Stafford, Stafford Heights, Taigum, Wavell Heights, and Zillmere, as well as parts of Brighton, Nundah, and Virginia.
Our building is the original Chermside State School, dating from 1900. In May 1999, the building was sliced in two and moved from its original location, the northwest corner of Gympie & Rode roads, to the Chermside Historical Precinct. The first meeting in our new headquarters was in April 2002.
We have over 50 members and a very talented management committee. We have provided information for many local park namings and have hosted large-scale events such as the 125th anniversary of Chermside State School. The society's members have published many books on aspects of our local area's history. We also have a hugely successful social media presence (see the links below).
